Sleeping bag! Although I didn’t always sleep in my car, mountain cabins or crash on people’s sofas, I used my sleeping bag probably 100/110 nights in Canada. Just because there was no doubt about its length or warmth. Rating 10/10. Price: 300 CAD; Price/usage: 3 CAD

For the serious car sleeper, a must: a pillow. There’s ways to improvise this though and save both on volume and weight – just stuff a pillowcase with cloths. (If you have any dry ones.) Rating: 6/10. Price: 29 CAD. Price/usage: 0.3 CAD

And the winner is… bottled water. No matter whether you live in your car or a motorhome, you need lots of it – for drinking, cooking, cleaning your dishes and brushing your teeth. Plastic bottles are great cheap containers. Rating: 10/10. Price: USD 1.99. Price/usage: USD 0.04

Priceless, but expensive: EXPED sleeping pad. But after quite a few nights on a 20mm foam pad you know exactly where your hip bones and your vertebrae stick out the most. If I wanted to keep sleeping on hard floors, I would need something, and I went for the best. Rating: 7/10 Price: 290 CAD. Price /usage: CAD 7.6

I shunned Thermos bottles for a long time, I just brought much lighter plastic bottles along for a long time. Maybe it’s because of the age, but I really started appreciating them again.
